Sony's Cloud Gaming
So earlier this week, Sony announced that they were acquiring Gaiaki, a videogame streaming service, for $380 million. What does that mean for us as gamers? Who knows? Will we see the end of going into your local retailer and picking up a physical copy of a game? Will we instead be waiting on our PS4s until midnight local time so we can play the latest installment of Call of Duty?Probably not... unless streaming is a lot faster and better than my experiences have led me to believe. I'm thinking that Sony will use the technology more as added value than as primary delivery for their videogame content. Maybe Sony will stream games from their consoles to their handhelds? Maybe we'll get older, less resource intensive titles to be streamed as a way of making up for lack of backwards compatibility? I have no idea what this technology is capable of. I'm looking forward to what will eventually grow out of this.
One thing is sure though, Sony will need to buff up it's pipelines so it doesn't take four days to download large files...
