Love crappy movies but are too ashamed to admit it? Are you a big Rob Schneider fan but you're tired of being burned? Not sure if you want to waste your money on the same old movie? That's why you have Joe.
Joe Loves Crappy Movies is by Joseph Dunn. Joe willingly goes to see the very worst that Hollywood has to offer. Whenever a crappy movie comes out Joe will be there to see it, make fun of it, and actually review it. Nothing is safe, and nothing is sacred. From the big budget action disasters to the low brow fart based comedies, to anything starring Martin Lawrence? Joe will tear it apart.
With each entry you'll get not only a comic poking fun at the movie, but also a detailed review. Joe's not educated in film or cinematography or acting, he's just a guy that draws comics and likes movies. So if you're looking for the everyman perspective and a little joke in comic form... you're in the right place.
A History of Violence
Released: 9/30/05
Viewed: 4:45pm 9/228/05
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, William Hurt, Ashton Holmes
Directed by: David Cronenberg
Can you believe this is based on a comic? It's true. In these times when comic book movies are big business, everything has been optioned and scripted. On one hand, It's bad because an Ant-man movie is in the works. No one wants to see that happen. But at the same time, little known masterpieces are getting a chance to hit the big screen. Great stories that never would have been given a second look are now being developed. Thanks, Spider-Man.
The most notable "Holy-crap-that's-a-comic!?" movie that's come out is Road to Perdition starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. A brilliant movie about revenge that got Oscar respect. Deservedly so. History of Violence is a different kind of movie, but very much of the same caliber, if not better.
I loved this movie. It was brilliant. It's slow and haunting and constantly engaging. It's the sort of movie where you wait for the bad stuff to happen, and the waiting freaks you out. You know it's coming. And you want it to happen just so you can relax. "Show me the bloody corpse so I can rest comfortably, you bastards!" It's like that the whole time. That steady balance of anticipation and reaction are what keep you going.
The anticipation involves some of the best acting I've seen this year. Mortensen as quiet diner owner Tom Stall plays this part brilliantly. He's quiet, and subtle. You never know what secrets he's keeping just under his tongue. Even with all this secrecy and suspicion (Is he a liar? Is he telling the truth? Homer was right.) he's still a genuinely nice guy. Maria Bello who plays his wife also does a superb job. Her face in the closing scene is unforgettable, and even though she spends most of the movie setting up the talent around her, it's still clear that she's one of the most natural, and appealing actresses working right now.
Ed Harris and William Hurt clearly had the most fun with their parts. It's a given that both are fine actors, but you can tell each had a blast figuring out who these characters were, and how they'd behaved. It's great to see such seasoned vets really enjoying themselves.
The payoff after waiting is the best part. You wait for it, and when the violence rears it's ugly head you'll cringe and squirm with delight. It's spontaneous and quick, as action should be. Very graphic and very extreme, but really cool. Rarely do you see a movie with justifiable credibility and acting talent that is willing to push this far violently. The two rarely share the screen, so it's an interesting marriage. I love a good violent romp and I can appreciate when an actor is acting their ass off, so, for me, this coupling is very welcome.
Some may complain that the wait for the violence is too much. I say to embrace that anxious desire. You know it will come. The waiting is what makes it so good.
As graphic as the violence is, it does seem extreme. If someone did this in real life, would it really look that cool? It would, more likely, be a lot sloppier. Few people fight with such grace and flair. More often than not, people end up flopping on the ground wailing their arms in a general direction. I don't know, maybe I haven't been in enough fights. And maybe the ones I've been in I've been doing it all wrong. But what they did get right were the sex scenes. Knowing that even beautiful people look ridiculous when they're doing it is very comforting.
I don't want to say much more because the movie is good, and everyone that can appreciate good violence, and good acting will really enjoy it. 8.5 out of 10. Loses points because it is long, and that can be hard to take. I also could have used a little more violence, but - I loves me some action. To be fair, the action that's in there is fantastic.
DVD worthy?: I think so. It's certainly a worthy movie, but I'm not sure how often I would watch it. If the price were right, I would pick it up.
If you liked this movie check out: Man on Fire
Man on Fire is one of my favorite movies from last year. It stars Denzel Washington as a tortured soul who finds something to live for. When that purpose is taken away from him, he gets ridiculously brutal. In truth, the movie is really two movies practically split down the middle. It's an hour and a half of set-up and character development followed by an hour and a half of utter brutality. You'll be in awe of the on-screen acting as much as you're in awe of how far this guy will go to get what he needs.
Like History, Man of War is a legitimate, quality, well-acted movie that is ruthless and unapologetic in its violence. It is long, but it's worth the trip.
Trailer Hitch: Brokeback Mountain
This one looks a little intense. But when Ang Lee does a period piece about two cowboys on the down low? people sit up and listen. The movie looks to be a close study on the struggle to be a homosexual in a close-minded era and a close-minded region. Looks like they both reject it, but are still drawn to it. An interesting topic that will give both Ledger and Gyllenhaal some room to show what they can do. Between this, Proof, and Jarhead, Gyllenhaal has set up a hell of a year. Ledger needs this one though after a disappointing Brother's Grimm and the painfully weak-looking Casanova. The movie could be potentially uncomfortable to watch, but a lot of good movies are.
If you vote today, you'll see my weapon of choice. So, vote at your own risk! OOOOooooOOOO?
Edited for the web by Brandon J. Carr Hells yeah.
Joe – The creator of the strip who has embraced giving crappy movies the chance they deserve. Like the majority of the cast he’s obsessed with boobs.
First Appearance - The Introduction
Yeo – Yeo is Joe’s wife and often the voice of reason in the strip. Having her act rational allows the rest of the cast to embrace being in a comic strip which primarily involves randomly punching people, interacting with fictional characters and talking about boobs. Yeo is smart, beautiful and way too good for Joe. Don’t tip her off.
First Appearance - Fever Pitch
Irv – Joe’s movie-going sidekick who’s always down for watching Jason Statham crescent moon kick some thug through a plate glass window and getting some drinks before after and during a Vin Diesel movie. Like the majority of the cast he’s obsessed with boobs.
First Appearance - Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior
Agent 337 George Jones – A government Agent that took over for Joe after he was bad-mouthing President Bush in the V for Vendetta strip. George ran the show for over a month bring a much needed sense of patriotism and justice to both the strips and reviews. He eventually got too attached to his work, empathizing with Joe’s plight to give crappy movies a fair shake. In a way he came to love crappy movies as well and was pushed out of the position. He spiraled out of control and ended up in prison. His adventures will be told in the limited series JLCM Presents: 337 Locked Up which is set to début Christmas of 09.
First Appearance - V for Vendetta
Other Notable Appearances: Stay Alive, Ice age 2, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, Slither, Here Comes Guest week, Let’s Go To Prison
Leonidas – The former king of Sparta who has traveled into the future and is having trouble coping with the modern times. Yelling loudly and kicking people into giant holes doesn’t really work the same way it did in the olden days. As time as gone by he’s adjusted but it’s a safe bet that he’s always one bad message away from throwing a spear through someone.
First Appearance - 300
Other Notable Appearances: Four Brothers, Strip# 300, The Golden Compass, Rambo, Untraceable, The Ladies of Max Paybe
Palpatine – Former Senator, Emperor of the Galactic Empire, Sith Lord... He shows up in the Joe Loves Crappy movies galaxy on occasion to let people know that they’re being stupid. No one’s really sure how he shows up in this universe but chances are it breaks all kinds of copywrite laws.
First Appearance - Episode III: The Dark Side
Other Notable Appearances: Four Brothers, Night Watch, Saw 3, Are We Done Yet
Slow Billy – Billy is a sweet kid but he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. If you’re watching him for the day be prepared to explain to him the plot of the movie or how popcorn works or, not so much where babies come from, but what babies are. He’s a complete moron.
First Appearance - Four Brothers
Other Notable Appearances: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Da Vinci Code, Vantage Point, Journey to the Center of the Earth
Kyle the Movie Snob – Be careful what fun facts about movies you tell your friends at a friendly gathering or in line for the latest blockbuster, because if you’re even slightly wrong, Kyle will be more than happy to let you know. He usually gets what’s coming to him though. Poor guy has cracked three ribs since joining the JLCM cast.
First Appearance - Ultraviolet
Other Notable Appearances: 16 Blocks, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Transformers, Journey to the Center of the Earth
Jean-Luc Picard – Another lawsuit waiting to happen is Jean Luc Picard who, towards the end of the strip’s first year, became the go-to background character. If there was ever a seat to fill or a random person to place wandering around in the background, nine times out of ten it was Picard. While Picard has crossed paths with Irv he and Joe have never met. Perhaps they will some day but for now just can an eye on the background.
First Appearance - The Producers
Other Notable Appearances: I’m not telling you, that’s no fun. It’ like Where’s Waldo – go find him!
Ice Cream Sandwich – Delicious and… deadly? Usually when you see someone eating an Ice Cream sandwich, someone else is experiencing a substantial amount of pain. Still, how nice is an ice cream sandwich on a hot summer day?
First Appearance - Saw IV
Other Notable Appearances: Bee Movie, Run Fatboy Run, Saw V
