3D or not 3D...
Back when Nintendo first announced the existence of the 3DS, I was sold. Even though there was no possible way I could actually see the 3D effect for myself, I was intrigued enough to want one. But a lot of questions were left unanswered... when would it come out? How much would it cost? What games would be released for it?Now that those questions are pretty much answered, do I still want one? Kind of? I guess? I think I may have been more enamored with the idea of the 3DS and not so much enamored with the actual 3DS. As I’m learning more and more about the handheld, the less I want to get one right this second. The hefty price point and the amorphous “launch widow” for the games doesn’t inspire the consumer within me. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still like one, but I’m probably not going to line up at 3 in the morning at the local Best Buy to get one. Probably.
Maybe when I see the handheld in person it’ll rekindle my desire for one. I’m sure the 3D is impressive. And there are a few games that I wouldn’t mind playing. But it seems like a no brainer to me to have a “killer app” (in this case a must have game) launch with the system. While, like I mentioned before, there are a few games I wouldn’t mind playing, there isn’t really anything I want that I couldn’t get somewhere else. I’m a huge Street Fighter fan, but I’ve already got Super Street Fighter IV. It doesn’t make a difference to me if the hadoken is right in my face or not.
So will I end up getting a 3DS? I think so. I may not be excited by the reality of the system, but I am excited by the possibility of it. I’m hoping that the more 3D is out there, the more it’ll be utilized as more than just a gimmick. Because right now that’s all that 3D is... a gimmick. Something, while kinda cool, doesn’t really add much to the gaming experience.
