I picked up the first trade for 30 Days of night Yesterday and tore through it before bed. It was good, but not what I expected. TI guess that I'm not really sure what to expect for the movie.
The book overshadows so much. It's not like we're on a journy with the survivors or the vampires. There's so much we're not seeing. And as incredible as the art in the book is, I'm not sure there were a lot of visuals to look forward to in real life. The Helicoptor jump, and the final punch (without getting into spoilers) could look cool, but .. who knows?
I'm looking forward to the movie for sure though. Should be scary as all get out. |

And with WETA doing the makeup and effects, the movie's at least going to look AMAZING. _________________ www.trevoramueller.com

That's a promising thing, but I didn't like the writing. The art was the thing that kept me going, and that's not how a comic should be. |

Yesterday I was anxiouse to read the second trade to get in the mood for the movie this weekend, but couldn't find it at my comic shop. I decided to pick up the third one, hoping that it would still make some sense on its own. And it did.
It's the Return to Barrow storyline where a brother to one of the dead comes to town to fill the sheriff duties. There were a lot of things I enjoyed more in this book than in the first one. I thought the set up was done perfectly. Admiottedly though it is a much simpeler premis.
The first book has a more dramatic ending, but they breeze through so much stuff. The ending here is more anti climactic, but it feels like a complete story.
and the dude with the beard (John Ikos) is a total bad ass. |

I read the first trade online, as well as the Dead Space arc. Both were pretty good, but yeah, there's not a whole lot of character moments. I think that may be a good thing because it whet my appetite enough to want to see the movie, but there's a good chance that the movie will also fill in some of those gaps and make it a more interesting experience.
I'll probably read some of the other stories online later this week: Return to Barrow, Spreading the Disease, Stella & Eben, Bloodsucker Tales, etc. _________________ Everybody needs a Joe. |

I flipped through the trade, but didn't pick it up. I didn't like the art.
The premise for 30 Days of Night seems like something a lonely goth kid would stumble upon when he's exhausted from trying to write Anne Rice fan-fiction.

| I think it's a great idea. It's such an odd characteristic of the way our world works. Adding that in with Vampire mythology is really cool. I think it works. |

Oh, I think it works. But it's such a Bull-from-Night-Court forehead slapping moment. It seems so obvious, it amazing that with all the vampire lore available, no one thought of it before.

I'm off to see the midnight screening in about 15 minutes. Here's a preview image for the comic:

I pretty much hated 30 Days of Night. It just read like a real crappy horror film, with awesome artwork. I keep hearing about interesting sounding projects written by Steve Niles but can't bare to buy them after having read this highly acclaimed title. If this is his good shit, I don't want anything to do with his bad.
It should make a decent movie though. The visual I have seen are awesome and hopefully they add a bit more to it story wise. |

The movie was great. A beautiful adaptation on the comic that expands on the right parts and gets rid of the baggage.
I'm off to try and crank out this review by dawn. |

Ok, the full comic and review are now up:

I feel like I could've said a lot more about it though. I only grazed the surface focusing mostly on what worked about the adaptation and how freaky vampires can be.
Somebody else see this so we can start talking about "CJ". |
